Solution Verified by Toppr
Correct option is D)
Speed at the time of hit is calculated as magnitude of velocity at that instant. And velocity has two components, horizontal and vertical whose value depend on the angle but their resultant will be same.
In other words the speed at moment of hit can be calculated by conservation of mechanical energy, as height is constant so decrease in potential energy or increase in kinetic energy will be same whatever the angle of projection be.
Option D is correct.
Also, speed is scalar it does not depend on direction.
Note- if throwing it vertically downward then the vertical component will be greatest but resultant of horizontal and vertical will be always same for any angle.

SOLUTION
the speed does not depend on the initial direction.
As the stone falls under the gravitational force, which is a conservative force, the total energy of the stone remains the same at every point during its motion.
From the conservation of energy, we have:
Initial energy of the stone = final energy of the stone
i.e.,(K.E.)i+(P.E.)i=(K.E.)f+(P.E.)f
max
⇒12mv2+mgh=12m(vmax)2
maxgh ⇒vmax=v2+2gh
From the above expression, we can say that the maximum speed with which stone hits the ground does not depend on the initial direction.
