Given:

A watch gains 5 seconds in 3 minutes and was set right at 8 a.m.

Concept used:

1 hour = 60 mins and, 1 min = 60 secs.

Calculations:

In 3 mins the clock gains 5 secs.

In 3 × 20 mins = 60 mins that is 1 hour, clock will gain 5 × 20 = 100 secs.

Now, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on same day, in 14 hours, the watch will gain = 14 × 100 = 1400 secs.

In terms of mins = 140060 = 23 mins 20 secs.

So, when the correct time is 10 p.m. the watch would show 10 : 23 : 20 p.m.

∴ The answer is 10 : 23 : 20 p.m.
