    Let speed of stream = x

    So downstreams speed = 18+x

    And upstream speed = 18-x

    It takes thrice the speed as long as to row up as to row down

    So 3(18-x) =(18+x) 54-18 =4x x =36/4 x=9 km/h

    So speed of stream is 9 km/h.

    Let, a= x; b= 3x (a is down stream ,b is upstream)

    Rate of steam = 1/a-b kmph

    = 1/x-3x =1/-2x =2x

    Man's rate in still water = 1/a+b kmph

    18= 1/a+b a + b = 1/18 x +3x =1/18 4x = 1/18 2x = 9

    Therefore , rate of stream is 9 kmph
