Avatar: The Way of Water, the long awaited sequel to James Cameron's record-breaking Avatar, is finally heading for its cinematic debut. While it might seem unbelievable, the actual relase date has been confirmed and is holding firm.

The title was revealed alongside the first teaser trailer, which landed online in May. Though it was more of a teaser of the visuals, and less a tease of the plot, the trailer was viewed almost 150 million times in its first 24 hours.

"It sounds kind of nuts, the process," Cameron admitted to EW about his plan for the sequel. "I mean, if Avatar hadn't made so much damn money, we'd never do this — because it's kind of crazy."

Once the sequel does arrive this year, it'll kickstart a succession of sequels every other year until Avatar 5 in December 2028. But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves and concentrate on Avatar 2 for now.

Here's everything you need to know about Avatar: The Way of Water.

Avatar 2 release date: When will Avatar The Way of Water be out in cinemas?

To cut a long story short, Avatar 2 is finally going to be released on December 16, 2022, having been pushed back from December 2021 due to the ongoing global health crisis.

The sequel started filming in 2017, but given the movie is a mix of live-action and motion capture elements, it's not a surprise it's taken a while. In September 2020, Cameron revealed that they were "100% complete" on Avatar 2 and around 95% finished on Avatar 3.

As mentioned above, Cameron said in April 2022 that he is putting the "final touches" on the sequel, so everything seems on track for the December release. FINALLY.

Given that we've got three other movies to come, Cameron has been working on all of them in recent years. In December 2021, he revealed he'd already filmed some of Avatar 4 due to the young cast.

"Anything that had to be done with a specific actor, we did all the scenes for 2 and 3 together – and a little bit of 4," he told Variety.

"I had to shoot the kids out. They're allowed to age six years in the middle of the story on page 25 of movie 4. So I needed everything before then, and then everything after, we'll do later."

Cameron has also said that he might not actually direct Avatar 4 and 5, but teased that the fourth movie is a "corker". "I actually hope I get to make it. But it depends on market forces. Three is in the can so it's coming out regardless," he told Empire.

"I really hope that we get to make four and five because it's one big story, ultimately.”

As we mentioned, the teaser trailer was premiered at CinemaCon and was released exclusively in cinemas with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness before being released online and you can check it out again below:

At the Digiday event, more footage was shown to lucky guests, one of whom was filmmaker Liam O'Donnell who said the film "appears to be the most insanely complicated movie ever made. Holy shit. James Cameron's Digital Day keynote just broke [my] brain".

Avatar 2 title: Say hello to Avatar The Way of Water

As mentioned above, Avatar 2 is now officially called Avatar: The Way of Water.

Interestingly, way back in November 2018, BBC News reported that the four planned Avatar sequels will be called Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar: The Seed Bearer, Avatar: The Tulkun Rider and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa.

Cameron later confirmed these are potential titles and since the first one proved to be true, perhaps these will be the titles of the following three movies too.

Avatar 2 cast: Who's back in Avatar The Way of Water?

The core cast of the original Avatar are all on contract, so Cameron's stars will be back in when it finally hits.

Zoe Saldaña will reprise the role of the Na'vi princess Neytiri, with Sam Worthington also returning as the human-turned-Na'vi, Jake Sully.

Stephen Lang is back as the dead Colonel Miles Quaritch, and he's going to be the main villain of the four movies and from the teaser, there was a fan theory that one of the Na'vi characters is actually Quaritch who potentially had his DNA or his mind uploaded into an avatar, much like Jake did in the first movie.

And Lang confirmed the theory in July 2022, saying that Quaritch is now "bigger, he's bluer, he's pissed off". Uh-oh.

Sci-fi goddess Sigourney Weaver will also be back as Na'vi teenager Kiri, the adoptive daughter of Neytiri and Jake in the sequel. She told Interview magazine that she had to learn parkour for the role, as well as freediving — something she relishes having learned.

Kate Winslet is playing the role of Ronal in all the Avatar sequels, marking hers and James Cameron's first collaboration since the 1997 blockbuster Titanic. Ronal is the "deeply loyal and fearless" co-leader of the Metkayina clan.

is an upcoming American epic science-fiction film directed by James Cameron and produced by 20th Century Studios.[2] It is the second film in Cameron's franchise, following (2009). Cameron is producing the film with Jon Landau, with Josh Friedman originally announced as Cameron's co-writer; it was later announced that Cameron, Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Shane Salerno took a part in the writing process of all sequels before being attributed separate scripts, making the eventual writing credits unclear.[3][4][5][6] Cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, and Matt Gerald reprise their roles from the original film, with Sigourney Weaver returning in a different role.[7] New cast members include Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Michelle Yeoh, Brendan Cowell, Oona Chaplin, CJ Jones, and Vin Diesel.

Cameron, who had stated in 2006 that he would like to make sequels to if it was successful, announced the first two sequels in 2010 following the widespread success of the first film, with aiming for a 2014 release.[8][9] However, the addition of three more sequels (to the first one) and the necessity to develop new technology in order to film performance capture scenes underwater, a feat never accomplished before, led to significant delays to allow the crew more time to work on the writing, preproduction, and visual effects.[10] Preliminary shooting for the film started in Manhattan Beach, California, on August 15, 2017, followed by principal photography simultaneously with in New Zealand on September 25, 2017; filming concluded in late September 2020, after over three years of shooting, despite production being interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The film's theatrical release has been subject to repeated delays, with the latest occurring on July 23, 2020.[11] It is currently planned for a release on December 16, 2022, with the following three sequels to be released, respectively, on December 20, 2024, December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028.[12][13] Being made on a budget of $250 million, it is one of the most expensive films of all time.

Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, a former human who fell in love with Neytiri and befriended the Na'vi after becoming a part of the Avatar Program, eventually taking their side in their conflict with humans and leading them to victory. He left his human body to permanently become one of the Na'vi.[15][16]

Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri, daughter to the previous clan chief, future Tsahìk of the clan, and Jake's wife.[15][16]

Sigourney Weaver as Kiri, Jake and Neytiri's adoptive teenage daughter.[17] Weaver originally appeared in the first film as Dr. Grace Augustine, a human who takes the side of the Na'vi and dies during the conflict. Although both Weaver and Cameron confirmed that she would return in the sequels, she stated in 2014 that she would not play the same character.[7][18][19] Like most of the cast, she learned free-diving for the film and filmed scenes underwater.[20]

Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch, a human who led the forces of the RDA, the human organization colonizing Pandora, in their conflict with the Na'vi. Quaritch has been restored to life by the RDA by becoming a Recombinant, a Na'vi Avatar embedded with the memories of a soldier.[21] Although the character died at the end of , Cameron confirmed in 2010 that Lang would return in the first three sequels, stating, "I'm not going to say exactly how we're bringing him back, but it's a science fiction story, after all. His character will evolve into really unexpected places across the arc of our new three-film saga."[6][22] He later stated that Quaritch would act as the main antagonist once again, in all four sequels.[23][24]
