    The pKa value of acetic acid is 4.76.

    The cause of the acidic nature of carboxylic acids can be attributed to the delocalization of charge.

    The carboxylic group of carboxylic acids is considered to be a resonance hybrid.

    In the resonance hybrid of carboxylate ion, an oxygen atom of the hydroxyl group acquires some positive charge.

    It thus attracts the electron pair of -O-H bond more towards itself.

    Thus, displacement of the electron pair helps in the release of the proton of the OH group.

    The release of proton forms the carboxylate ion.

    This ion is also a hybrid of the given structures.

    Thus, both acid and ion are stabilized by resonance, and carboxylate ion is even more stable than the acid because the resonating structures are equivalent structures.

    Phenol is acidic in nature and its ion is also resonance stabilized, but the negative charge in carboxylate ion is dispersed over two oxygen atoms whereas in phenoxide it is distributed over only one oxygen atom.

    Hence, the carboxylate ion is more stable than the phenoxide ion.

    Hence, carboxylic acids are more acidic than phenol and alcohol because of greater resonance stabilization of their conjugate base.
