Describe a time when you searched/looked for information from the internetWhen was itWhat information were you looking forWhere you were searching on the internetHow did it help you (how you felt about the information)

The Internet has become an integral part of our lives. Young generation now spends most of its time on the internet. Like others, I also use the internet for various purposes. Most of the time I see what my friends and family have posted on Whatsapp or Facebook.

Here, I would like to talk about a time when I searched for information about how to repair the computer. During the final year of my graduation, it was a Sunday evening and the next morning I had to submit a project in my college. The project was an application/ software which could be used for conducting online exams of students.

I had already made that software so on that evening when I started my PC to check whether my software is working fine, the computer showed a blank screen. And I restarted my computer many times but it was still showing a blank screen. I went to all local computer repair shops but because of Sunday, they all were close. So finally I thought of repairing it myself.

YouTube is the second largest search engine for all types of creative projects and solution for your problems. So I searched on YouTube “reasons of blank screen on the computer”. There were many people who were giving different reasons of why one can have a blank screen on the computer. Most of them suggested that before doing any major change in your computer hardware, first take the RAM out of your computer, clean it with a soft cloth or a rubber and then reinstall it.

There are likely chances that your computer screen will start working. I did the same thing; I took the RAM out, cleaned it and then reinstalled it. After installing the RAM, I switched on my computer and everything started functioning normally the screen was on. It was a great relief for me because now I could check whether my online exam software was working as it should be.

I check it and it was working fine. On the next day, I went to the college and demonstrated my project to the teachers. So the internet gave me the solution to my problem and I was really happy on that day.

IELTS Speaking Part 2: IELTS Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card.

Describe a time when you needed to search for important information on the internet.

    You should say:

    when it was

    what information you needed

how long it took you to get the information

and explain how you felt after you found the information on the internet.

[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]

    Model Answer:

If reading without a “looking glass” for a person with eye problems is incomplete and inefficient, searching for important information in today’s world without using the internet has to be incomplete as well. And, I also figured it out when I was searching for some important information about a couple of years ago.

I never really like to travel during the wintertime for two reasons. The first reason is, of course, I don’t enjoy cold weather that much. The second reason is that the winter causes the visibility of roads to become low due to foggy weather, and I am never really comfortable riding on a vehicle when the road visibility is low because it increases the possibility of an accident. But, I really needed to travel during the wintertime about a couple of years ago, because I wanted to see my younger sister, who had just given birth to a beautiful baby girl.

Anyway, I could either travel by train or by bus, depending on how fast I wanted to reach my destination, as well as the “visibility” of the road due to the hazy weather condition. I tried to call both the bus authority and the train authority in order to get the necessary information, but, while they were able to tell me exactly how long it would take me to reach my destination, they couldn’t tell me anything specific about the “winter fog”. So, I decided to hit the internet to find the information on winter fogs of those places, through which my train or bus would pass, by checking the usual temperatures and humidity levels of those areas. Luckily, I learned what I needed to know after searching for about 20 minutes.

Well, after finding the needed information, I felt really happy and relieved as I was able to find it rather quickly, comparing with other sources of information. I learned that the weather condition was not that bad for a daylong travelling. Besides, I also felt that I could rely on the internet more often in order to find important information for the purpose of meeting our daily informational needs.
