Ranja Chaudhuri answered this
The arable of the district of Champaran was divided into large estates which were owned by the English landlords. Indian tenant worked on these lands. The chief commercial crop grown was indigo. The landlords forced the tenants to plant 15% of their holdings which was three twentieths of their holdings with indigo. The sharecroppers were forced to surrender the entire indigo harvest as rent to the English. This exploitation was carried on by a long-term contract. Later, when the English landlords came to know about Germany making synthetic indigo they changed their strategy of exploitation. They obtained agreements from the sharecroppers to pay the landlords a compensation for being released from the 15% arrangement.
Gandhi, after knowing all this, visited the secretary of the British landlord's association. There he was not cooperated with. Then he called on the British official commissioner of the Tirhut division in which Champaran lay. Gandhi's efforts took him to the court on grounds of disobeying the British government. Gandhi was released without bail in the legal proceedings. The Lieutenant Governor of the province had ordered the case to be dropped but Gandhi and his team of lawyers carried on an enquiry. The enquiry proved to be a success when it forced the planters of give a refund of 25% to the sharecroppers.

Describe the exploitation the indigo sharecroppers by English land lord in champaran. How did Gandhi helped them to get an honourable settlement? Related: Short and Long Answer Questions
Most of the land in Champaran was under the possession of greedy and profit driven English landlords. Hence many people were left with no other option than to accept any demand of the masters to get their lands on rent. So did the Indigo sharecroppers. They agreed the settlement of British that gave them a opportunity of cultivating but forced them to reserve 15 percent of their land for indigo planting and give all of the indigo harvest as a rent. This was done on a long term basis and hence the exploited sharecroppers were forced to continue the same profession. Many of the sharecroppers were against this and rebelled but they lacked knowledge and resources for the same. Finally when Germany discovered synthetic indigo, expecting a huge drop in prices of natural indigo, the landlords befooled the innocent sharecroppers by offering them a freedom from the settlement on payment of compensation. Thus, the British landlords neglecting the plight of the poor sharecroppers continued to exploit them financially to quench their thirst of money.Yes, Ganndhiji played a very important role in getting them a honourable settlement. The sharecroppers lacked the knowledge and confidence to rebel against the wrongs of the British. The landlords considered them lords above the law and the peasants were living a terrified life. they had no leader to guide their actions. They could not do anything illegally as they possessed no power and legal methods needed money. Realising their plight, Gandhiji started helping them to get them out of of this miserable situation by his means of non-violence. He met many officials and discusses the matter with them. He had four meetings with the Lt. Governor of the British government and finally achieved a refund of 15 percent of the money raised as the compensation. The refund seems very little but according to Gandhi it was not money that mattered much. The settlement of Gandhi forced the landlords to give away their money and thus with it a part of the indigo, their prestige. It made clear that the landlords (British) could also be questioned.

Finally he saw no way out and he sank down on the ground, tired to death, thinking that his last movement had come. But just as he laid his head on the ground, he heard a sound, a hard regular thumping. There was no doubt as to what that was. He raised himself. "Those are the hammer strokes from an iron mill", he thought. (i) Why was 'he' in the forest? (ii) What can you say about the mood of the peddler? Justify.
