Houses in the semi arid regions of Rajasthan have traditionally constructed tanks for storing drinking water. They are big and are a part of the well-developed rooftop rainwater harvesting system. The tanks are constructed inside the main house or the courtyard, and are connected to the sloping roofs of the houses through a pipe. The rain falling on the rooftop travels down and is stored in the tanks. The first spell of rain is not collected as this water cleans the roof and the pipes. The rainwater from the subsequent spells is collected. This water is used till the next rainy season, and is reliable source of water even after other sources have dried up. The tanks also help in cooling the houses as rooms built around them have generally low temperatures due to conduction.

In Rajasthan, to store drinking water, ‘Rooftop rainwater harvesting’ was commonly practised.

Rain fed storage structures were created in agricultural fields. It allowed water to stand thereby moistening the soil – Johads in different parts of Rajasthan, and Khadins in Jaisalmer.

For storing drinking water, all the houses had tankas or underground tanks in Balmer, Phalodi, Bikaner regions of Rajasthan.

The size of tankas would be as large as a big room.

The Rooftop rainwater harvesting system had tankas which were built inside the courtyard or main house.

Through a pipe they were connected to the sloping roofs of the house.

These underground tankas are used to store rainwater, which falls on the roof and flows down through pipes.

Due to the perennial Rajasthan Canal, rooftop rainwater harvesting is on decline.

Hint: Rainwater harvesting is that the collection and storage of rain, instead of allowing it to escape. Rainwater is collected from roofs of houses and redirected to a tank.Complete answer:

Rain water harvesting in semi-arid regions of Rajasthan is administered within the following ways:-

    (i) In Rajasthan semi-arid regions, every house is having underground tanks to store the water for drinking purposes.

(ii) These tanks are large and deep which were built inside most houses or the courtyard.

(iii) They were linked to the sloping roofs of the homes through a pipe. Rainwater falling on the rooftops would run down through a pipe and collect within the underground tankas.

(iv) The rainwater collected, is stored within the tanks providing beverage till subsequent season .

    (v) When all other sources have dried up, these tanks were beneficial to fight against the summer heat as they kept the rooms cool. The rainwater or palar pani, as commonly known in these parts, is taken into account the purest sort of natural water.

(VI) Paar is a common water harvesting practice in the western Rajasthan region. It is a standard place where the rainwater flows from the agar and within the process percolates into the sandy soil. In order to access the rajani pani which is percolated water, kuis or beris are dug within the agor which is a storage area.

Note: In semi arid regions of Rajasthan rainwater harvesting helps utilities reduce peak demands during summer months, saving treated water for more important and appropriate water uses.
