    How do you divide Rs. 1800 into 3 parts in such a way that half of the first part, one-third of the second part, and one-fifth of the third part are equal?

    Solution: Let the three parts be x, y and z.

    x+y+z = 1800

    x/2 = y/3 = z/5 = k.

    x = 2k, y = 3k and z = 5k. Hence

    2k+3k+5k = 10k = 1800 or k = 180.

    x = Rs.360, y = Rs.540 and z = Rs.900.

    The three parts are Rs.360, Rs.540 and Rs.900. Answer.

    Say, first and second parts are x rupees and y rupees respectively.

    So, third part = (1800 - x - y) rupees.

    Now, (x / 2) = (y / 3) = (1800 - x - y) / 5

    So, y = (3x / 2) = 1.5x

    So, first part = x rupees, second part = 1.5x rupees and third part = (1800 - 2.5x) rupees

    Now, (x / 2) = (1800 - 2.5x) / 5

    Or, 5x = 3600 - 5x Or, 10x = 3600 Or, x = 360

    So, y = 1.5 * 360 = 540

    and (1800 - x - y) = (1800 - 360 - 540) = 900

    So, first part = 360 rupees, second part = 540 rupees and third part = 900 rupees.
