Products discharged from Chromium electroplating contain a large number of metals including copper, chromium, nickel, zinc, manganese and lead.
Adverse effects on health:1. Respiratory tract infection
2. Cancer
3. Permanent eye damage if exposed to particulate matter
5. Skin issues and baldness
To resolve the above problem followings things are followed:
1. non chromium alternative can be used: nickel, tin, cobalt etc
2. mild steel
3. Use of water insoluble chromium

Important Points to Remember on Chemical Effects of Electric Current
1. Liquids Conduct Electricity:(i) Water containing acids or alkalis or salt on the passage of electric current decomposes into hydrogen and oxygen.
(ii) Most liquids that conduct electricity are solutions of acids, bases and salts.
(iii) On touching an electric switch with wet hands, a person can receive an electric shock, because natural water contains dissolved salts and is a good conductor of electricity.
(iv) The electrically charged atom/group of atoms formed when a chemical compound is dissolved in water is known as Ions.
2. Chemical Effects of Electric Current:(i) The passage of an electric current through a conducting liquid causes chemical reactions. The resulting effects are called chemical effects of currents.
(ii) The process due to which a solution of chemical compound conducts electric current and at the same time undergoes a chemical change is known as electrolysis.
(iii) The process of electrolysis is used in
(a) electroplating,
(b) refining of metals,
(c) extraction of metals.
(iv) Water, containing acid or alkalis or salts forms an electrolyte.
(v) During electrolysis, the electrolyte undergoes a chemical change.
(vi) The negatively charged ion formed when a chemical compound dissolves in water is termed as Anion.
(vii) The electrode connected to the positive terminal of a cell/battery is termed as Anode.
(viii) The electrode connected to the negative terminal of a cell/battery is termed as Cathode.
(ix) The positively charged ion formed when a chemical compound dissolves in water.
(x) The metal wire/rod/plate through which current enters or leaves an electrolyte is known as electrode.
(xi) Non-electrolyte: A solution of a chemical compound which does not conduct electric current and hence does not undergo a chemical change.
(xii) Voltmeter: A vessel consisting of electrodes and the electrolyte, used during electrolysis.
3. Electroplating(i) The process of depositing a thin layer of superior metal on an inferior metal with the help of electric current is known as Electroplating.
(ii) During electroplating, the cations discharge at cathode by gaining electric charges, whereas anions discharge at anode by losing electric charges.
