## A train crosses a pole in 12 seconds. If the length of a train is 160 meters, what is the speed of the train in kmph?

Answer (1 of 3): The length of the train i.e 160m takes 12 secs to pass a point (pole). So, if it takes 12 secs to cover 160m, how many meters can the train travel in, 1 hour = 60 min x 60 sec = 3600 secs? => 160 x 3600/12 = 48,000 m/hr = 48 km/hr

Okay, so the length of the train is 160m, that means when the first point of the train reaches the pole, it further has to travel 160m so that the last point of the train crosses the pole.

So the distance travelled, d= 160m

This distance is covered in, t= 12sec

So, the speed of the train, v= d/t=160/12=13.33m/s=13.33*(18/5)=48km/hr

Train crosses a pole in 12 sec. it means train crosses its own length.

i.e. train covers 160 m in 12 sec.

So the speed of train = 160/12 = 40/3 m/s

In km/hr, 40/3 * 18/5 = 8*6 = 48 km/hr.

A 300 m long train crosses a platform which is three times of its length in 6 minutes. What is the speed of the train?

The length of the train = 300 m (given)

The length of the railway platform = 3 × length of the train (given) = 3 × 300 m = 900 m

The length of the train plus platform = 300 m + 900 m = 1200 m

Time taken by the train to cover 1200 m = 6 minutes

Distanceccovered by the train in 1 minutes = 1200 m/6 minutes = 200 m

Distance covered by the train in 60 minutes = 200 × 60 = 12000 m

Speed of the train = 12000 m/hour = 12 km/h

A train 108 meters long passes an electric pole in 20 seconds. What is the speed of the train?

So... A train passing the pole is equivalent to saying that the pole is passing the train

And the speed with which the train moves towards the pole is the speed with which the pole moves towards the train...

In the train's frame, the pole covers 108m in 20seconds. So the speed of the pole is 108/20 = 5.4m/s which also happens to be the actual speed of the train

We know that,

**Formula∶**Speed = Distance/Time

Now, Speed = 250/12 ⇒ Speed = 125/6 m/s

⇒ Speed = 125/6 × 18/5 km/hr [∵ 1 m/s = 18/5 km/hr]

∴ Speed = 75 km/hr
