    1) INVOLUNTARY ACTIONS:

It is a set of muscles movement over which we do not have any control. such actions are controlled by the brain.

For example, contractions of muscles of our digestive tract, the beating of Heart etc.

    2) REFLEX ACTIONS:

It is a rapid, spontaneous and involuntary activity that is produced in response to the stimulus. It is controlled by the spinal cord.

For example, removal of hand with a jerk when someone touches a hot object.

How are involuntary actions and reflex actions different?

Answer:Involuntary action – Involuntary action is the set of muscle movements that do not require thinking. But it is controlled by the brain for example beating the heartbeat.Reflex action – Reflex action is rapid and spontaneous action in response to any stimulus which doesn’t involve the brain. For example – shutting eyes immediately when bright light is focused on them.

Difference between involuntary action and reflex action

Following is the table which is a quick summary of the difference between involuntary action and reflex action:

    Involuntary actions Reflex actions

Involuntary actions take place without the conscious choice of an organism. Reflex actions are those actions that take place along with stimuli.

These actions are controlled by the medulla oblongata or the midbrain. These actions are controlled by the spinal cord.

The speed is relatively slower. The speed is very quick.

Example: Beating of heart Example: Blinking of eyes.

Hint: Involuntary means unintended. An involuntary action is one that is unintentional. Reflex action is an involuntary and almost instantaneous movement in feedback to a stimulus.

    Complete answer:

The difference between involuntary actions and reflex actions are: -

    Involuntary actions Reflex actions

Involuntary actions are the actions which are not controlled by our will. Reflex actions are the sudden action in response to something.

They do not need any kind of stimulus to work. They required stimulus for its action.

These actions are regulated by the brain. These actions are regulated by the spinal cord.

They do not involve skeletal muscle. They do involve skeletal muscle.

These actions are performed throughout one’s life. These actions are produced in response to an event of an emergency.

This action may be quick or slow. Reflex actions are always quick.

For example - The beating of the heart is an involuntary action.- Salivating when food is put in the mouth. For example- Immediate withdrawal of hands upon touching a hot cup of tea.- Closing the eyes, when bright light is focused.

    Note:

An involuntary action is performed without the control of the nervous system.  An involuntary action is unintentional and we cannot do it by thinking about it even if we wanted to.

In the medical field, reflexes are often used to assess the health of the nervous system. We might imagine that reflexes are immutable (unchangeable). But in reality, however, most reflexes are flexible and can be substantially modified to match the requirements of the behaviour.
