In a class, 60% of the students are girls and there are 20 boys. What is the strength of the class?

A 35 B 30 C 40 D 50 Open in App Solution

The correct option is **B**

50

Let the strength of the class be

x . Given that 60 % are girls, so 40 % are boys. Now, 40 % × x = 20

(Since number of boys in the class is 20)

⇒ 40 100 × x = 20 ⇒ x = 20 × 100 40 ⇒ x = 50

Therefore, total number of students in the class is 50.

In a class, there are 1/4 boys and the number of girls is 30. What is the total number of students in the class?

There are 40 students

we form an algebraic equation using a letter(x) to represent the unknown number of students in the class

Therefore; 1/4(x) + 30 = x

by grouping like terms,

30=x-1/4(x)

30=x(1–1/4). Where (1–1/4)=3/4

30/(3/4)=x x=40 Bruce Bell

There are 150 students in a class, out of which 2/5 are girls. What is the number of boys in the class?

The main assumption behind the question lies is the fact that we need to assume that there are no transgenders in the class. If done , the question becomes quite easy .

Number of girls= 2/5* 150= ( 2*150)/5= 60

From our assumption,

number of boys+ number of girls= number of students

Hence, number of boys = 150-60 = 90

Solved :)

P.S - I am not against transgenders . I stand for them. The unacceptance of the third sex lies in this very basic fact that from a very young age we are taught that there are only 2 sexes .

**Given:**

Part of the students which are girls = 60%

⇒ Part of the students which are boys = 40%

Percentage of girls passed = 45%

Percentage of boys failed = 40%

No of girls failed = 66

**Calculation:**

Let the total number of students be 100a

⇒ No of girls = 60a ⇒ No of boys = 40a

No of girls failed = (100 - 45)% × 60a = 55/100 × 60a

⇒ 33a

As per the question;

⇒ 33a = 66 ⇒ a = 2 ⇒ 100a = 200

Percentage of boys who passed the exam = (100 - 40)% × 40a

⇒ 24a ∴ 24a = 24 × 2 = 48

⇒ The number boys who passed the exam is 48.

**Shortcut Trick**

By Tree Method

Let the total number of students = 100

**∴ The number boys who passed the exam is 48.**

**Alternate Method**

Using unitary method:

The number of girls who got failed = (100 - 45)% = 55% = 66

⇒ 1% = 1.2

⇒ The number of girls = 100% = 1.2 × 100 = 120

But these are 40% of the total students.

Now, 60% = 120 ⇒ 1% = 2

⇒ The total number of students = 100% = 200

⇒ The number of boys = 200 - 120 = 80

The number of boys passed = 80 × 60/100 = 48

**∴**The number boys who passed the exam is 48.
