Given:The student gets +3 marks for each right answer and -0.5 mark for each wrong answer
Total number of questions = 250
Total mark secured = 477
Concept:Assume the student has attempted all the 250 questions, so that if number of Wrong questions = x then, number of Right questions = 250 - x
Calculation:Let number of Wrong questions attempted = x
⇒ Number of Right questions attempted = 250 - x
Now,
((250 - x) × 3) - (x × (1/2)) = 477
⇒ ((750 - 3x) × 2) - x = 477 × 2
⇒ 1500 - 6x - x = 954
⇒ 7x = 546 ∴ x = 546/7 = 78
The number of wrong questions attempted by student = 78

In an examination (+3) allotted for each correct answer and (-2) for each wrong answer). Student scores 400 marks.
Let him get x correct answers and (150 - x) answers wrong. Equation formed would be:
3x - 2(150- x) = 400
=> 3x - 300 + 2x = 400
5x = 700 therefore x = 140.
Hence the student has answered 140 questions correctly and 10 questions incorrectly.
Let's check:
Correct = 3*140= 420
Wrong = 2*10 = (-) 20
Net marks scored= 400 marks.

Suppose he has answered x questions incorrectly.
Then he has answered 150 - x questions correctly.
So we have the equation
(150 - x)(3) + (- 2)(x) = 400
=> 450 - 3x - 2x = 400
=> 450 - 400 = 3x + 2x.
=> 5x = 50 x = 10.
So the student answered 10 questions wrongly.

number of wrongly answered questions = 150 - x
x(3) + ((150-x) * (-2)) = 400

number of incorrectly attempted questions = 150-x
