India vs New Zealand 1st ODI Highlights – 18 Jan 2023

India vs New Zealand Highlights today. 1st ODI (D/N), Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad, Wednesday 18-1-2023, New Zealand tour of India 2023.

India vs New Zealand 1st ODI Highlights – 18 Jan 2023

    Latham:

Bracewell’s was an amazing innings. The situation of the game and then playing innings like that, needing 12 off four, to put it in that situation was outstanding. Disappointing to not get across the line. Right up there, chasing a big score, the team under pressure and it was outstanding. We’ve seen it from him before – believe it or not. Hopefully, we can take confidence from that for the next game. I think the ball gripped a bit more, we saw them use the cutters more. But the partnership between Bracewell and Santner was great.

    Rohit:

To be honest, the way Bracewell was batting, we knew it was going to be a challenge. It was such clean striking. After we had them five down, we knew we were in the game unless we slip up. And that’s what happened. But we always knew the threat of bowling under lights and with the dew like I said at the toss, which is the kind of challenge we wanted. Watching Gill bat is fantastic, clean striking, and no aerial shots. We wanted to give him a run before the SL series the kind of form he was in. He’s such a free-flowing batsman. Siraj has been brilliant, of late even in the other two formats. He’s gone from strength to strength, running hard and clear about what he wants to do. He’s not afraid to use the short ball as well which is exciting.

Gill is the Player of the Match:

I was waiting eagerly to go out there and do what I wanted to do. I wanted to unleash but sometimes you don’t get to do it with wickets falling. I got to do it in the end. When the bowler is on top, you have to get them under pressure otherwise it’s easier for them to create dot balls. I tried to get singles and boundaries and get them under pressure. I wasn’t thinking about 200 before I hit those sixes in the 46th or 47th over. That’s when I thought I could get a double. I won’t call it a “wow” feeling but it feels nice when the ball goes off the bat how you want it. There’s certainly a feeling of satisfaction. It has sunk in pretty well, this is certainly one of those things, like what dreams are made of.

    India, elected to bat first.

“looks a good pitch, a little dry. It’s about making sure we bowl under the lights and try and defend scores as we did against SL,” Rohit says. “Everyone is pushing each other in the squad.” KL Rahul, Iyer, and Axar are replaced by Hardik, Thakur, and Kishan.

Latham says he would have bowled first anyway. He says his slightly inexperienced side has plenty of games behind them but doesn’t look bothered by that. Three seamers and two spinners his combination.

    India vs New Zealand

Need to rest the fingers after that carnage, first by Shubman Gill and then by Michael Bracewell. Shubman Gill undoubtedly won the player of the match award, but this match will be remembered for Bracewell's heroics and his partnership with Mitchell Santner. A 140 from 78 deliveries and he said that it was not his day. Just an example of how cruel cricket can be, and cricket is a direct subset of life that explains us, how it can fallout at times. But you can't give up and neither will New Zealand. They are expected to come back stronger in the next match.

The two sides will play in Raipur on Saturday. Have a good time until then! We will see you again on Saturday.

India vs New ZealandShubman Gill, Player of the Match: I was waiting eagerly to go out and do what I want to do. With wickets falling, at times I wanted to unleash and I'm glad I could do it at the end.

Sometimes when the bowler is on top, you need to make them feel pressure. Need to avoid dot balls, show some intent, and hit hard into the gaps. If you let them take over, it gets easier for them to bowl more dot balls. Which is what I was doing.

Wasn't really thinking of 200, but once I hit sixes in the 47th over, I did feel that I could. Before that, I was playing what was coming to me.

He (Ishan Kishan) is one of my best mates. I was there when he scored his ODI double-hundred (against Bangladesh) and it was special.

It feels nice when you are wanting to do something and it is coming off on a regular basis. Definitely a sense of satisfaction. It (double ton) sunk in pretty well once Bracewell started hitting those shots and we felt like we could lose the game. The Game went much closer than I expected.

India vs New ZealandRohit Sharma, India captain:  To be honest, the way he was batting and the way it came on to the bat nicely,, we knew it was not going to be easy to defend that total. We knew that if we bowled well, we would be okay unless we really slipped up with the ball.

Unfortunately, that's what happened. I did say at the toss that I'd like to see us challenge ourselves, not quite the situation I expected but that's how it is.

He (Shubman Gill) is going really well. The form he was in, we wanted to make use of it and that's why we backed him in the SL series, he deserved those chances. Free-flowing batter and it's quite exciting to watch.

Siraj has been brilliant, not just in this game but in the red-ball, T20 format, and now ODIs of late. Really good to see what he does with the ball. Executing what he wants to do and he is very clear about his plans.

India vs New ZealandTom Latham, New Zealand captain: It was an amazing innings (from Bracewell). From 131/6, to come and play an innings like that, for him to put our team in a situation to win the game, it's outstanding.

Obviously disappointing, we couldn't get across the line but it was special. When you're chasing and coming in a pressure situation, to give us a chance to win that game was special.

I think it probably gripped a bit more under lights, India used a lot more cutters into the wicket and it worked. Bracewell batted well and his partnership with Santner was very good to see.

    22:07 (IST)

India vs New ZealandMichael Bracewell: We were just trying to give ourselves a chance (by building a partnership after six wickets). Unfortunately, we fell short right at the end. Once Mitchell (Santner) and I managed to settle, we started believing. We weren't trying to win it then, just wanted to take it deep to give us a chance.

That is it from this outstanding game. India take the lead and will meet the Kiwis again on 21st January at 1330 IST (0800 GMT) Do join us early for the build up. Cheers!

    22:15 (IST) Jan 18

Shubman Gill wins the Player of the Match award. He says he was eager to do this and he had his moment. Adds he tried to put the bowler under pressure and it was his plan to show some intent. Reckons he wasn't thinking much of 200 but was thinking of partnerships. Says it is satisfying when the ball travels through the gap. Feels the game went close than he expected.

    22:12 (IST) Jan 18

Rohit Sharma says the way Michael Bracewell was batting, they knew it was difficult to defend. Adds after keeping New Zealand 5 down they knew they are in the game but the bowlers failed to execute some plans. On Gill, Rohit says it is clean striking from him. Adds they wanted to give him the opportunity and it is exciting to watch him. On Siraj, Rohit says he was brilliant and is bowling well in all three formats.

    22:08 (IST) Jan 18

Tom Latham says it was an amazing innings from Michael Bracewell. Says it was just outstanding to take this game so deep. Shares they were on the edge of their sit and tells they will take confidence from this game. Reckons the pitch was responsive but he again goes on to applaud the performance of Michael Bracewell and also of Mitchell Santner.

    22:06 (IST) Jan 18

    ...Presentation coming up...

    22:01 (IST) Jan 18

Earlier, after choosing to bat first, it was the Gill show. The opener of India scored a double-hundred and single-handedly took his team over 300. When the others struggled, Shubman Gill put on a show and entertained everyone. In the end, it turned out just enough.

    22:00 (IST) Jan 18

India kept their nerves but their bowling was a bit ordinary. Apart from Mohammed Siraj, no one looked composed. There were too many extras as well. What looked like an easy win for India, they had to work hard and the bowlers had to handle their nerves. We feel New Zealand started the chase slowly and that didn't help them. And also lost wickets at regular intervals but if there is any positives from the game, it is the innings from Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner.

    21:56 (IST) Jan 18

Here is the man himself, Michael Bracewell says they just tried to give themselves a chance. Feels he gathered a bit of information of the bowlers but all that matters is when the ball comes and they have to think quickly. Shares they tried to take the game deep and did not think much about winning the game. Reckons they left too many runs to chase in the final phase.

    21:54 (IST) Jan 18

India have won the match but take a moment and applaud the performance of Michael Bracewell. New Zealand were dead and buried at 131 for 6. It looked like an easy win for India but then came the blinder from Michael Bracewell. He single-handedly kept the Kiwis in the game. Michael Bracewell was striking at all parts and at one point looked like will take his team home but the chase turned out to be too big. Michael Bracewell played a gem of an innings and got support from Mitchell Santner as well but in vain in the end.

    21:49 (IST) Jan 18

An LBW appeal is taken upstairs. The players are shaking hands.
