ABOUT THIS TUTOR ›

Okay. So Paul is p years old

John is 4 years younger than Paul so,

John is p - 4 years old

In 2 years, John will be p - 4 + 2 years old or p - 2 years old assuming **p is Paul's age now**. However, in 2 years, Paul will be 2 years older so **John will always be 4 years younger than Paul.**

## Jack is 14 years older than his brother John. The sum of their ages is 68, how old is each person?

Answer (1 of 13): x = John x + 14 = Jack. Hence x+x+14 = 68 x + x = 68 - 14 2x = 54 2x/2 = 54/2 x = 27 Hence; x = John = 27 x + 14 = Jack = 41 Jack is 41 years old and John is 27 years old.

x = John x + 14 = Jack. Hence x+x+14 = 68 x + x = 68 - 14 2x = 54 2x/2 = 54/2 x = 27 Hence; x = John = 27 x + 14 = Jack = 41

Jack is 41 years old and John is 27 years old.

Take Jack's age as x, John's age as y

x = y + 14

x + y = 68, so x = 68 - y

So y + 14 = 68 - y

Add y and subtract 14 from each side

2y = 54 y = 27 x = 41

So Jack is 41, John is 27

Jack is 41 years old and John is 27 years old.

I divided 68 by 2 equal to 34

Difference in age is 14. Divide that by 2 is 7

Add 34 add 7 is 41 ( Jack)

Then 34 minus 7 is 27 (John)

If 5*5=25, what is 6*6?

A tough one to answer. I hope I can crack it, here it goes:

5*5 = 25 6*6 = (5+1)*(5+1)

Now before we move on, let me introduce you to one formula which says:

(a+b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2

Using this logic,

(5+1)*(5+1) = (5+1)^2

= 5^2 + 2*5×1 + 1^2 = 5*5 + 2*5*1 + 1*1

Using BODMAS rule I.e. Bracket of Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction, Multiplication will get the priority

Now as we know that 5*5 = 25, hence the equation now becomes:

= 25 + 2*5*1 + 1*1 = 25 + 10 + 1 = 36

So the answer is 36 :)

27 and 41. I solved this by subtracting 14 from 68 to find their ages without the difference. 54 is then divided by 2 to find the younger age of 27. I then added 14 to 27 to get Jacks age. Hence I arrived at 27 and 41. 14 year age difference with a sum of 68.

James is 3 times as old as his brother. If the sum of their ages is 96, how old is James?

let us take james’ brother’s age as x so james age will be 3*x=3x

so if james’ age + james’ brother’s = 96.

putting this in equation…

3x+x=96 4x=96 x=96/4 x=24

therefore james’ brother is 24 years old and james is 24*3=72 years old

Jack is 14 years older than his brother John. The sum of their ages is 68, how old is each person?

Jack’s age is x. John’s age is y.

x+y=68 (equation 1) x-y=14 (equation 2)

Add the equations together for 2x=82. Therefore, x = 41.

Using x=41, y=27.

Jack is 41. John is 27.

Trial and error is probably just as quick though due to the question’s relative simplicity.

Guys, does anyone know the answer?
