So if the average age is 24 then the current aggregate age is 24 x 5 = 120

but at birth she was 0 years old therefore aggregate age 8 years ago - 120 - (8x5) = 80

but there were only 4 people who actually could be counted. The new born baby didn’t register a year or even a month.

So average age = 80/4 = 20 years old

5x=120 —-> 5x=120-5x8 so 5x=80 so x=16.

Average age is 16. This assumes you are counting the youngest as a person of zero years old rather than someone who is about to be born, so one less family member.

x/5 = 24 x = 120

120 - (8 * 5) = 80 {because other members were also 8 years younger}

80 / 4 = 20

The average age of a family of 5 members = 24 years.

Sum of the ages of the 5 members = 5*24 = 120 years.

The youngest member is 8 years now.

8 years ago their total age was 120–8*5 = 80.

The average age of the 4 members 8 years ago = 80/4 = 20 years.

I get 28 years as the average age of the family members prior to the youngest one being born.

But you say, at the time of birth - then perhaps it would be 22.4 years if you average it over 5 members.
