Know Your Mobile (KYM)
Through KYM, you can check the validity of your mobile device even before buying it. IMEI is written on the mobile packaging box. It could be found on the mobile bill/invoice. From your mobile you can check the IMEI number by dialling *#06#, IMEI number will be shown on mobile screen. If the status of the mobile is shown as Black-listed, duplicate or already in use, please avoid buying the mobile. KYM could be used through any of the following 3 methods.
SMS
Type KYM <15 digit IMEI number> from your mobile and send the SMS to 14422.
KYM app
Download the KYM app from Play Store (for Android) or from App Store (for iOS).

With the aim to curtail the counterfeit mobile phone market and discourage mobile phone theft, protect consumer interest and facilitate law enforcement authorities for lawful interception, DoT intends to implement Central Equipment Identity Registry (CEIR) that connects to the IMEI database of all the mobile Operators. CEIR acts as a central system for all network Operators to share black listed mobile devices so that devices blacklisted in one network will not work on other networks even if the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card in the device is changed.

Bro My phone also got stolen, same g8x in India. See if you have connection and link try to use them before the week is over. Once the phone is sold or handed over to repair shop, the first thing they will do is to change your IMEI number. And if they get success thn there is no way you can track your phone.

Doesn't matter if you had a lock too. They can just hard reset your phone. If it's stolen and you haven't found it, there's almost no chance you'll find it back. Count your loss and get a new one. Find my phone would have only worked if you had installed it and enabled it

Retrieval chances do not improve as that depends upon local admin. However, whole process is quite guided and documented on that website.
It seems state police may have to mandatorily report on this portal if not done by user.
If IMEI is not tampered (these days phones are hard to reprogram), the phone won't work on any Indian network, rendering it useless... also saves one from legal hassles arising out of misuse on lost devices...

This is not difficult as the mobile service providers are still in the control of central govt. State police will have the option to use this database if they want.
However the most important part is to block activation of any mobile connection on a stolen IMEI number, which is not mentioned on the portal.

From the site:
After the successful submission of blocking request, the user's phone is blocked within 24 hours. After the phone has been blocked, it cannot be used on any network across India.
Note: This does not prevent the police from tracking the lost/stolen phone.

Blocking IMEI of stolen phones option has been in place for quite some time now.

Indian CEIR softwares are not auto-linked to the internarional EIRs, I think. :-(
Thus unless we ourselves somehw register the IMEI in respective EIRs or the consortium's database, tge IMEI will not e blocked by carriers outside.
