    Summary of “The Fun They Had”

    A famous American writer and professor of biochemistry, Isaac Asimov wrote the prose ‘The Fun They Had’. This story is about fully digitalized books and virtual classrooms. He mentioned that the teachers in the class will be replaced by mechanical teachers (robots). The entire story is around two children namely Margie and Tommy, who spend their life in computer dominating world. This chapter explains how the classrooms were completely transformed from the olden days.

    On 17th May 2157, Margie was writing her diary about how Tommy found an old storybook made up of papers. Once, Margie’s grandfather told his grandchild about his young age. Meanwhile, he mentioned that in the olden days they used printed papers to read stories. Both Margie and Tommy took a storybook and started turning the crumpled and yellow pages of the book. They felt funny, reading the fixed words. As they were familiar with the words moving on the computer screen. Tommy also said it is a waste to read a book and throw it away once completed. He also explained that his television can replace millions of books and can store plenty of data.

    Later they started knowing about ancient days schools, which consist of human beings as teachers than mechanical teachers. Even though Margie does not like the concept of schools, she was amazed to know actual persons taught at school. Because her teachers are robots and her classroom is next to his bedroom. She doesn’t have a separate classroom but she always has loads of homework.

    Both Margie and Tommy are studying in a virtual classroom, which is full of gadgets and robots. They need to learn their daily lessons from a computer screen. After knowing the ancient day classes, Margie was excited about her grandparent's schools and the fun they had while visiting a school in the olden days. Meanwhile, she started imagining a special building like the school for studying together with same-aged neighbour kids like in ancient days.
