4. The letters in the word ADOPTS are permuted in all possible ways and arranged inalphabetical order then find the word at position 42 in the permuted alphabetical order?a) AOTDSPb) AOTPDSc) AOTDPSd) AOSTPDSOL:In alphabetical order : A D O P S TA _ _ _ _ _ : the places filled in 5! ways = 120, But we need a rank less than 120. So the wordstarts with A.A D _ _ _ _ : empty places can be filled in 4!=24A O _ _ _ _ : the places filled with 4! ways = 24. If we add 24 + 24 this total crosses 42. So Weshould not consider all the words starting with AO.A O D _ _ _ : 3!= 6A O P _ _ _ : 3!=6Till this 36 words are obtained, we need the 42nd word.AOS _ _ _ : 3!= 6

Are these permutations all exactly 6 letters long and all letters are repeated exactly once per permutation? If not, the 42nd permutation alphabetically would be 42 consecutive letters A. However, common practice accepts those assumptions, and hereafter so will I.

The 42nd permutation of "ADOPTS" when sorted alphabetically is "AOSTPD."

A quick factorials/permutations review: There are, by definition, N! permutations of N letters. This is because there are (N-1)! permutations following the first letter, and that number of permutations are repeated N times (once for each possible first letter). Fo

In how many ways can the letters of the word ‘education’ be arranged so that vowels are in alphabetical order?

So there are nine letters total, five of which are the vowels a, e, i, o, and u. Let’s imagine nine “slots” that we are going to fill with letters. First let’s determine how many ways we could arrange the five vowels.

The number of ways we could choose five of the nine slots to put the vowels in is given by

9!/(4!5!) = 126

Once we’ve chosen the five slots for the vowels, there’s only one way we could arrange those vowels: alphabetical order. So that’s our vowels placed. There are now 4 slots remaining for the letters d, c, t, and n.

The number of ways we could arrange those four letters in the rem

In how many ways can the letters of the word INCURSION be arranged such that the vowels are in alphabetical order?

Since we are forcing the vowels to only appear in a specific order, we can essentially ignore the differences between the vowels and just say “there are 4 vowels.” In other words, you have 2 Ns, 1 C, 1 R, 1 S, and 4 Vowels for a total of 9 letters. Once you have determined where the vowels go, you place the Is in the first two vowel positions, then the O in the third, and U in the last.

So there are 9 positions that the C can go into. Then 8 positions remain for the R, and 7 for the S. Then choose 4 of the remaining 6 positions for vowels. Finally, choose 2 of the remaining 2 positions for the
