Plasmolysis in a plant cell is defined as (a) break down (lysis ) of plasma membrane in hypotonic medium (b) shrinkage of cytoplasm in hypertonic medium (c) shrinkage of nucleoplasm (d) none of them

    B) Shrinkage of cytoplasm in hypertonic medium

When a plant cell is kept in a hypertonic medium, the water inside the cell moves outside due to exosmosis and this causes the cytoplasm to shrink. This phenomenon is known as plasmolysis. During the plasmolysis majority of osmotic water flows into the central vacuole and drastic changes in the protoplast size and shape can affect the subcellular architecture of the plant cell.

Plasmolysis is one of the results of osmosis.

It happens in extreme conditions like when the cell is placed in a hypertonic solution.

An example of plasmolysis is higher concentration of salt and sugar is used in pickles and jam.

Due to the higher concentration, the microbes get plasmolysed.
