Drift, static error, dead zone and non-linearity are undesirable static characteristics in measurement systems.Drift is an undesired gradual change of instrument output over a period of time which is unrelated to change in input, operating conditions or load.
The dead zone is defined as the range within which the variable can vary without being detected.
Accuracy and linearity are related to each other, so it is better to keep non-linearity as small as possible.
Static errors are errors that don’t change with respect to time which are also undesirable.
Important PointsFidelity of a system is defined as the ability of the system to reproduce the output in the same form as the input. It is the degree to which a measurement system indicates changes in the measured quantity without any dynamic error. It is not a static characteristic.
Sensitivity: It is defined as the ratio of the changes in the output of an instrument to a change in the value of the quantity being measured. It denotes the smallest change in the measured variable to which the instrument responds.
Deflection factor or inverse sensitivity is the reciprocal of sensitivity.
Drift: It indicates the variation of the output with the time. No drift means that with a given input the measured values doesn’t vary with time.
Factors which causes drift are stray electric and magnetic fields, thermal emfs, changes in temperature, mechanical vibrations, wear and tear and high mechanical stresses developed in some parts of the instruments etc.
Stray and electromagnetic fields are can be prevented by proper shielding
Effect of mechanical vibrations can be minimized by having proper mountings
Temperature changes during the process should be preferably avoided otherwise compensation need to be used
Drift can be classified as three categories.
Zero drift: If the whole calibration gradually shifts due to slippage, permanent set, or due to undue warming up of electronic tube circuits, zero drift sets in. It can be prevented by zero setting. The characteristics are shown below.
Span drift or Sensitivity drift: If there is proportional change in the indication all along the upward scale, span drift. The characteristics are shown below.
Zonal drift: In case the drift occurs only over a portion of span of an instrument, it is called as zonal drift.
Dead zone: It is the largest change of input quantity for which there is no output of the instrument.

BSNL holds a BSNL TTA Exam to recruit candidates for Telecom Technical Assistant (TTA) post. For the last recruitment cycle of BSNL TTA, a total number or 2700 vacancies were released. It is expected that the BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) will release the same or more than the previous year's vacancies. The selection of the candidates for TTA will depend on Online Examination and Document Verification. Candidates can refer to the BSNL TTA previous years' papers to increase their chances of selection.
