Tortoise creeps on land as it cannot lift its body up.

Unlike amphibians, the skin of the tortoise is dry and scaly.

Neck is absent in amphibians but in tortoise, the neck is present between the head and trunk.

The digits of tortoise have claws, which are absent in amphibians.

Thus, tortoise cannot be included in class - Amphibia, though it lives on land as well as in water and is included in class Reptilia.

Tortoise are classified under the class reptilia and not the class Amphibia as it has the following features:

2. Breathing occurs with lungs. The gills are not visible in any phase of life.

3. They do not lay eggs in water.

4. Their eggs are surrounded by hard shells and not by gelatinous coverings.

(1) When tortoise lives on the land, it respires with the help of lungs. When in water, it puts its nares ( nasal openings ) out of the water and breathes air. (2) It cannot take up oxygen dissolved in water. In both the habitats it respires with the help of lungs. (3) In case of true amphibians, this is not the case. (4) They can breathe in water with the help of skin and on land with the help of lungs. Tortoise also has exo-skeleton which is lacking in Amphibia. Therefore, tortoise cannot be included in class Amphibia.
