T20 kitKolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are a franchise cricket team representing the city of Kolkata in the Indian Premier League. The franchise is owned by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, actress Juhi Chawla and her spouse Jay Mehta. The Knight Riders play at the Eden Gardens stadium.[1]

The franchise, which has gained immense popularity due to its association with celebrity owners, qualified for the IPL playoffs for the first time in 2011. They became the IPL champions in 2012, by defeating Chennai Super Kings in the final. They repeated the feat in 2014, defeating Kings XI Punjab.[2] The Knight Riders hold the record for the longest winning streak by any Indian team in T20s (14).[3]

The side's all-time leading run-scorer is Gautam Gambhir,[4] while their leading wicket-taker is Sunil Narine.[5] The official theme of the team is () and the official colours are purple and gold.

    Franchise history

In 2007, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) created the cricket tournament Indian Premier League, based on the Twenty20 format of the game.[6] Eight teams participated in the inaugural tournament held in April – June 2008. The teams representing the eight different cities of India were put up on auction in Mumbai on 20 February 2008. The team representing Kolkata was eventually bought by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's company Red Chillies Entertainment in partnership with actress Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta for a price of $75.09 million, equal to approximately ₹2.98 billion at that time.[7] Sourav Ganguly, former captain of the Indian national team, a native of West Bengal and the current President of BCCI, was named the Icon player for the team. The name of the team is a reference to the popular 1980s American television series Knight Rider.[8]

In June 2015, the team's ownership group bought a stake in the Caribbean Premier League's Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel,[9] and renamed it the Trinbago Knight Riders in 2016.[10] In December 2020, the team also made an investment in the upcoming American T20 league Major League Cricket.[11]

In 2021, the Knight Riders Group CEO, Venky Mysore, announced their entry into the South African T20 league with Cape Town Knight Riders and signalled intentions to invest in ECB's new competition format, The Hundred.[12]

    Valuation

According to Forbes in 2022, the valuation of Kolkata Knight Riders stand at $1.1 billion.[13]

    Livery

Initially, when the Kolkata Knight Riders were first introduced in 2008, the logo of the team consisted of a blazing golden Viking helmet against a black background with the name of the team written in gold next to it. However, the black background was changed to purple in the third season. It was in 2012 that the current logo, which has a blazing purple Corinthian helmet trimmed with gold, with Kolkata Knight Riders written within a shield was introduced.[14]

The tagline of the team was "All the King's Men" during the first four seasons.[15] However, in the fifth it was replaced by "New Dawn, New Knights". The team's official colours were black and gold during the first two seasons. At the time, Khan said that "golden symbolizes spirit of life and black presents the Goddess Kali."[15] It was later changed to purple and gold during the third season and was kept so. The jersey was created by Bollywood fashion designer Manish Malhotra.[15]

The main theme of the team () was scored by Vishal–Shekhar duo.[15] A album featuring several singers and music composers including Usha Uthup and Bappi Lahiri was also created.[16][17]

    Rivalries

The Knight Riders have historically been a successful franchise in the IPL. This success has led to them having many rivalries among other teams.

    Mumbai Indians

Both the teams play in major markets, as the Mumbai Indians play in Mumbai and the Kolkata Knight Riders play in Kolkata. The Mumbai Indians are the most successful IPL franchise with five championships, but until Mumbai's third championship, both the teams were tied with two championships. In the first two seasons of the IPL, Mumbai swept Kolkata in all four games. It was not until the 2010 IPL Season that Kolkata won against Mumbai. Both sides have been captained by Indian cricket legends at one point (Mumbai was captained by Sachin Tendulkar, and Kolkata was captained by Sourav Ganguly). This rivalry has often played out in Mumbai's favour, as they have won 22 games compared to Kolkata's nine wins. Both have played each other twice in the playoffs.[18]

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are an Indian Premier League cricket team that represents the city of Kolkata (IPL). Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, actress Juhi Chawla, and her husband Jay Mehta own the franchise. The Eden Gardens stadium is where the Knight Riders play.

Because of their association with celebrity owners, the Kolkata Knight Riders have garnered a lot of attention. In 2011, they qualified for the IPL for the first time. They won the IPL in 2012 after defeating Chennai Super Kings in the final. They won the championship again in 2014, this time defeating Kings XI Punjab.

    Kolkata Knight Riders History

The owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, is in desperate need of good scripts. He doesn’t have to look any further than his own team for a good story. The journey of  Kolkata Knight Riders players has everything that makes a blockbuster: big names, fights, crushing defeats, and finally sweet victories.

Former Indian captain and cricket’s ‘Dada’ Sourav Ganguly captained KKR in the first season. Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, Ricky Ponting, Shoaib Akhtar, and other big names were on the team.

Everyone remembers the first IPL game, when opener Brendon McCullum smashed an unbelievable 158 off 73 balls, including 10 boundaries and 13 sixes, to help KKR defeat RCB by 140 runs. Following a thunderous start, KKR’s thunder fizzled and began a series of disappointments until Gautam Gambhir was given the captaincy. Under his legendary leadership, KKR won the IPL twice.

KKR released Saurav Ganguly after IPL 2010

Ganguly was not purchased at auction by KKR in 2011. They spent 2.4 million dollars on a dependable Gautam Gambhir and 2.1 million dollars on Yusuf Pathan.

Shakib Al Hasan, Brad Haddin, Jacques Kallis, Brett Lee, Ryan ten Doeschate, Eoin Morgan, and James Pattinson are among the other international players who have been added. This was the start of a new era for the side. The team won 8 of their 15 games, allowing them to qualify for the eliminator for the first time.

Glorious victory of Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012 IPL

KKR purchased a magician in the 2012 auctions who wrote history for his team without the use of a magical wand. He was none other than Sunil Narine. It was so difficult for the batters to understand his bowling. He bowled crucial overs as KKR won 12 games, including the finals against Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings.

Kolkata erupted, and Shah Rukh Khan and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee turned it into a huge carnival.

Another Feather on Kolkata Knight Riders Cap in 2014

In 2014, the Kolkata Knight Riders once again demonstrated their outstanding sportsmanship by putting up an outstanding display. This time, the opponent was Kings XI Punjab. The victory was also replicated under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir.

Indian players Robin Uthappa, Umesh Yadav, Manish Pandey, Suryakumar Yadav, and Piyush Chawla, along with Morne Morkel, Patrick Cummins, and Chris Lynn, made a strong team. Gautam Gambhir’s tactical captaincy was spot on, as the KKR team went on to win 11 games that season. They defeated Kings XI Punjab while chasing a big total.

    Disappointments for KKR Team

KKR finished fifth, fourth, third, and fifth in the 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2020 seasons, respectively, but what was more notable was that the team handed opportunities to players such as Ankit Rajpoot, Jaydev Unadkat, Rishi Dhawan, Ishank Jaggi, and others.

The franchise made it apparent in the 2018 auctions that they are looking about the future by not selecting their most successful skipper, Gautam Gambhir. They signed Dinesh Karthik as captain and continued to give young players opportunities.
