Why is RAM not suitable for permanent storage?

RAM as engineered in the vast majority of PCs stores data as a charge on a an array of tiny capacitors which must be refreshed regularly. When power is removed or the refresh cycle is interrupted the data is lost. Other types of solid state storage can be persistent but not forever. The only type of RAM I know of that is persistent for long periods is the obsolete system of storage on a magnetic medium such as core memory or plated wire memory used in the 1950s into the 1970s.

Which of the features makes the RAM not suitable for persistent storage?

The only reason is that RAM has volatile memory. It means that a RAM loses its data once the power is cut. It requires continuous power supply to retain the data.

In some cases, can RAM store data permanently or not?

RAM is a volatile memory which can store data as long as the current is flowing through it. All data is lost as soon as the current stops flowing. We can store data permanently if current flows permanently, but this is not a definition of being permanent. So it can not.

Why not use RAM for all storage?

In the past, RAM was very expensive and a small size. It was not large enough to store all of the users files. Files were stored on magnetic media such as a hard disk drive, which is cheap, slow speed bulk storage.

Newer computers can now hold much larger amounts of RAM, depending on the model. Newer operating systems and software are designed to support much larger amounts of RAM.

The average PC user only has 4 to 6 GB of RAM installed.

If you buy a computer model that supports a lot of RAM (16, 32, 64 or 128 GB), you can use the RAM for storage as a RAM disk. Radeon RAMDisk

What are the introductory characteristics of RAM memory?

RAM stands for random access memory. This means that you access data stored in RAM by supplying its numerical address. The address is a binary number.

The amount of RAM that a system can access is limited by the size of the address that the system supports. This limit is set either by the CPU design or the system design, whichever is lower. It is expressed by the width of the address bus in bits. Each additional bit in the address bus doubles the number of addresses that the bus supports. The formula is 2 to the power of the width of the bus (e.g. 2^32 for a 32-bit bus).
