Ethyl alcohol on distillation with X gives chloroform class 11 chemistry CBSE

Ethyl alcohol on distillation with X gives chloroform X is A A paste of bleaching powder B Chlorine C Methyl chloride D CaOH2

Ethyl alcohol on distillation with X gives chloroform, X is:

    A. A paste of bleaching powder

    B. Chlorine C. Methyl chloride D. Ca(OH ) 2 Ca(OH)2 Answer Verified 163.7k+ views

Hint: The production of chloroform from ethyl alcohol takes place in three steps where calcium hydroxide and chlorine both are used as one of the reactants which is obtained from reaction of X compound with water.Complete step by step answer: Bleaching powder is a chemical compound with the formula

    CaOC l 2 CaOCl2

. The bleaching powder is also known as calcium hypochlorite.

Bleaching powder on dissolving in water gives calcium hydroxide and chlorine.

The reaction of bleaching powder with water is shown below.

    CaOC l 2 + H 2 O→Ca(OH ) 2 +C l 2

    CaOCl2+H2O→Ca(OH)2+Cl2

In this reaction, bleaching powder reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide and chlorine.

The ethyl alcohol reacts with the chlorine of the bleaching powder to form acetaldehyde.

The reaction of ethyl alcohol and chlorine is shown below.

    C H 3 C H 2 OH+C l 2 − → − − − −2HCl C H 3 CHO+2HCl

    CH3CH2OH+Cl2→−2HClCH3CHO+2HCl

In this reaction, one mole of ethyl alcohol reacts with one mole of chlorine to form one mole of acetaldehyde and two mole of hydrochloric acid.

Acetaldehyde further reacts with more chlorine to give trichloroacetaldehyde.

The reaction of acetaldehyde and chlorine is shown below.

    C H 3 CHO+3C l 2 →CC l 3 CHO+3HCl

    CH3CHO+3Cl2→CCl3CHO+3HCl

In this reaction, one mole of acetaldehyde reacts with three mole of chlorine to form one mole of trichloroacetaldehyde and three mole of hydrochloric acid.

The trichloroacetaldehyde reacts with calcium hydroxide to form chloroform.

    2CC l 3 CHO+Ca(OH ) 2 →2CHC l 3 +(HCOO ) 2 Ca

    2CCl3CHO+Ca(OH)2→2CHCl3+(HCOO)2Ca

In this reaction, two mole of trichloroacetaldehyde react with one mole of calcium hydroxide to form two mole of chloroform and one mole of calcium acetate.

Thus, ethyl alcohol on distillation with bleaching powder gives chloroform. X is a paste of bleaching powder.

So, the correct answer is “Option A”.Note:

In the whole process of formation of chloroform from ethyl alcohol three reactions take place one is oxidation reaction, second is halogenation reaction and third is hydrolysis reaction.

You don’t want to heat that, the reaction is exothermic and will heat up on its own. The hotter it gets the faster the reaction takes place. If anything you want to try to keep it cool so the reaction takes place slowly. The reaction gives yields Chloroform and (calcium [carbonate?]). If the temperature is high the Chloroform evaporates off and I’m under the impression that if it gets too hot the Chloroform can convert to a toxic gas. Definitely an experiment for a well ventilated area.

Depends on the powder. Calcium hypochlorite powder will make some level of ethyl hypochlorite and it will likely go BOOM. On the other hand non chlorine bleach powder (like Clorox II) will likely just sit there.

How safe is it to use a gold pen plating machine containing potassium cyanide? I'm scared to use it.

I used a brush playing solution containing small quantity of free potassium cyanide. I got poisoned when using it over the course of a week. I wore nitrile gloves, lab coat, shoes and safety glasses. At first, it started out as headaches and minor bouts of confusion in the early days. I thought nothing of this because I have been a chemist and have worked in laboratories and know this happens when around laboratory chemicals.

However, as the days passed, these symptoms continued and I noticed I was continuously tired (that’s an important warning sign!) as I continued to do the metal plating. I

    Is ethyl alcohol halal?

I had to look this up.

Sunni Islam has four “schools of thought” or “madhabs” on religious jurisprudence. (Remember, in an Islamic country Quran is the law of the land.) The biggest one is Hanafi madhab.

In Hanafi madhab, there are two kinds of alcohols: Khamr, which is made of dates or grapes, and non-Khamr, which is made from anything else that’ll ferment.

Khamr alcohols are always haraam, regardless of how much is consumed or the reason for consuming it. Vinegars made from khamr alcohol (wine vinegar) are also haraam if people had inoculated the wine with the microorganisms that cause vinegar

What is the difference between methyl alcohol and ethyl alcohol?

Methyl alcohol or methanol share some similar characteristics with ethyl alcohol or ethanol. They are colorless liquids, with very good solubility in water. The difference is that methanol is highly poisonous. Drinking only small amount of methanol can lead to blindness, or death (10–100 ml). Both methanol and ethanol have a pleasant odor.

Ethanol is poisonous also, but only when consumed in large quantities. It is an ingredient of many beverages and it can cause an addiction.

Methanol can be used to create a formaldehyde or as a fuel.
