What do you call this sport? It's not just football or soccer

Association football is the most popular sport in the world, but there is no consensus around the world for what it is called. The chief governing body is FIFA - Fédération Internationale de Football Association, though you don't hear people calling it Association football, usually it's soccer or football, and in non-English speaking countries, it is often some form of the word football, written phonetically (e.g. "futbol") or a translation of the word football.

In the UK, the term Association football came about to distinguish the game from the other versions of football played at the time (e.g. rugby football), and from the 'association' part of the name came the word soccer (assoc.).

Although the name soccer came out of the UK, there it is predominantly called football, while elsewhere in a few English speaking countries colonized by the British it is called soccer. You will find that soccer is still the main term for the game in countries in which there is another major sport called football (e.g. USA, Canada, Australia). Check out our poll on what do you call it?

As you can see in the list below, the sport is not just called either football or soccer. In some countries, the name of the sport may not be clearly one or another, and for some countries and languages it is evolving, typically countries that have traditionally called it soccer are starting to more regularly call it football.

I have tried to find the most commonly used name in each country, and included others if known. In countries in which there is more than one language spoken, there can be more than one name for the game. The lists are not complete. If you have any additions, comments or corrections, please let me know or add to the comments at the base of the page.

Map shows which countries call it 'football' and which call it 'soccer'

Redditor reddripper put together this excellent map of what "the beautiful game" is called around the world.

It's based on language etymologies. All the pink countries call it "football," or some literal translation of "football." All the blue countries call it "soccer," or some translation of "soccer." All the green countries call it something else entirely.

The takeaway: Americans aren't the only ones who don't call it "football." Not by a long shot. Much of Southeast Asia, Japan, Korea, Oceania, South Africa and even Italy call it something other than "football."

    Check it out (via r/soccer):

    r/soccer

The reason people all over the world call it football is simple — you kick the ball with your foot.

But why do so many people call it soccer?

Brian Phillips wrote a nice explanation for where the word "soccer" came from for Slate in 2010:

"It's an abbreviation of association football. Both soccer and American football come from the same set of precursor sports, which became popular in upper-class English schools in the early 19th century and spread across the Atlantic. All these games involved advancing a ball through an opponent's territory and scoring at the far end, but the rules varied from place to place. Ultimately, the version adopted as standard in the United Kingdom came to be known as association football, while another set of rules won out in the United States. Thus the Americans took to calling their gridiron variety football, and referred to the British sport by the slang term soccer, derived from the soc in association."

Some people refer to soccer as football. Do these people call the actual game of football something else?

“Football” is a name given to a range of team sports with different codes. For example,

    Association Football (or soccer)

    Australian Rules Football

    Rugby Football

    Gridiron Football aka American Football

    Gaelic Football

In much of the world where Association Football is the dominant sport, that game is simply referred to as “football.”

In the USA, where Gridiron Football is most popular, that version of the game is often referred to as “football.” In the rest of the English-speaking world, that sport tends to be referred to as American Football.

Some people refer to soccer as football. Do these people call the actual game of football something else?

A2A: The full name of “soccer” (“football” to many in the world) is “association football”—the “soccer” is a shortening of “association”, which is where the American term comes from (through England, by the way).

People who reference this “roundball sport” as “football” typically call the “egg-shaped sport” either “American football” or “gridiron football”. And of course another variant is often called “rugby football” or simply “rugby”.

All of these sports have a common ancestry and all were originally called “football” before their distinctions required them to be distinguished.

What are the most popular software development tools?

There are many good software development tools available on the market right now, but the problem is that none of them integrate the complete toolchain for the software development pipeline with organizational and communication tools. Using different tools often creates silos, leading to miscommunication, less efficient collaboration, and a loss of information. JetBrains decided to solve this problem and created a single platform, Space, for the entire development pipeline and communication process.

And what would the “actual game of football” be? American football?

The word soccer is a modified contraction of the original name Association Football which was shortened to Assoc and later modified to the more catchy Soccer. The acronym FIFA, which is the world ruling body of soccer, or should I say football, stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association (French).

In fact, football originated in England not as one sport but as a family of sports that included Rugby Football and Association Football. Rugby Football is conveniently called just Rugby, and Association Football is ca

Some people refer to soccer as football. Do these people call the actual game of football something else?

The actual game of football is football.

Of course there are other sports called 'football’ but none of them are played outside their country of origin. Ireland has a game called gaelic football and in Australia they play Australian Rules Football. In North America too they have a sport that they plagiarised from rugby which is called American Football but the funny thing is that the players’ feet almost never come in contact with the ball, so it isn't really football, is it?
